My Ward ancestors were a part of haplogroup R1b known as R1b1b2. This group reached prominence on the Iberian peninsula (Portugal and Spain) about 20,000 to 30,000 years ago and remains the most prevalent subclade for R1b Europeans of today.

When the last ice age was at its peak 18,000 years ago, much of northern Europe was covered, naturally, in ice and populations moved south. The tree line cut across Europe above Spain and Italy. The R1b1b2 population was heavily centred in Spain. This is shown in the following diagram as the dark blue population.

When the ice age receded from about 14,000 years ago, the R1b1b2 population moved north and commenced repopulating areas through Europe and into Great Britain.

The group would have reached Ireland about 10,000 years ago although people from Iberia would continue to migrate to Ireland through the ages.
